Deputy CEO - Rebecca Whelan

Rebecca is Deputy CEO and has responsibility for a wide portfolio, including school improvement, teaching and learning and Quality Assurance.

Prior to taking on the role of Deputy CEO, Rebecca had two successful headships, the most recent being the Principal of Abbey Hill Academy, a secondary school for young people with a range of learning difficulties and disabilities. Prior to that Rebecca was the Principal of Green Gates Primary Academy.

Having worked with children and young people with a range of needs across a range of school phases, Rebecca is passionate about ensuring that all children and young people achieve their full potential.

Rebecca’s early career was as an English Teacher and in 2007, Rebecca was nominated for a Teaching Award in recognition for her work to inspire pupils to take risks with their learning as well as her ability to put them at ease. Rebecca was described as a “forward thinker, innovative in her teaching methods and adept at raising the low self-esteem that many children with special needs experience”.

Throughout her career, Rebecca has gained successive promotions. Whilst a newly qualified teacher, Rebecca took on the responsibility of heading up the English department before stepping into the leadership role of Assistant Headteacher, successfully navigating a series of successful Ofsted inspections.

Rebecca gained a BA Hons in English from Teesside University and went on to study for a PGCE in Secondary English at Durham University. Rebecca has a National Professional Qualification in Executive Leadership (NPQEL) which gives her the knowledge and skills to successfully navigate into executive leadership and drive improvement across schools.
